Cranfield's Manufacturing Careers Guide to tackle industry skills shortages
Cranfield University has released a Manufacturing Careers Guide to encourage more people to take up a career in manufacturing.
The essential guide comprises of a number of career profiles to demonstrate the extensive job opportunities and career progression routes that are available to those working within the industry.
Professor Rajkumar Roy, Director of Manufacturing at Cranfield, said: “The manufacturing industry is crucial to the British economy, and for that to continue we need succession of the many essential job roles and specific skills required. There are many misconceptions about the industry, but it is full of cutting-edge technology, digitised practices and helping to progress the sustainability agenda.”
The release of the guide comes soon after a Barclays report that found almost half of the 2,000 young people surveyed said a career in manufacturing does not appeal to them; ranking the sector 17th out of 19.
Unsurprisingly, the report also found that more than half of manufacturing organisations had difficulties recruiting new employees despite roles offering desirable skill such as decision-making, complex problem-solving and technical skills.
Professor Roy added: “We hope this guide will encourage more people to see the opportunities available to them in manufacturing and take up careers in this fantastic industry.”
