Central Bedfordshire Council agreed on a new Sustainability Plan last week (Thursday 26 September), responding to changes in national policy, new technology and evolving local needs.

The refreshed plan, first adopted in September 2020, addresses new opportunities and challenges to keep the Council on track to meet its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2030, particularly considering the current climate emergency and rising energy costs.

In particular, the updated plan focusses on:

• Cost-of-living crisis and energy efficiency: A stronger focus on reducing energy use in council buildings and supporting residents to do the same, helping to bring down bills.
• National focus on active travel: The establishment of Active Travel England mirrors the Council’s efforts to promote walking, cycling, and wheeling.
• New legislation and policy changes: The council has adapted its plans to comply with new laws, such as the Environment Act, which emphasises creating and improving natural habitats, and updated national planning policies and building regulations.
• Technological advancements: With improvements in electric vehicle (EV) technology and renewable energy solutions like solar power, the financial case for green investment has never been stronger.
• Extreme weather events: More frequent and severe weather events, such as the floods hitting Central Bedfordshire right now, highlight the importance of climate adaptation in the council’s long-term planning.

The Council has already made significant progress towards its sustainability targets through the current Local Plan, improved bus services, and the implementation of Local Walking and Cycling Infrastructure Plans. These successes, along with securing external funding and private sector investment (including £1.5 million for EV charging), reinforce the Council’s commitment to a sustainable future.

The refreshed Plan will maintain its focus on four key areas: improving Council processes, leading by example, encouraging investment, and influencing change. Actions will be prioritised to ensure maximum impact, particularly through securing additional government grants and private-sector funding. The Council will also aim to address weaknesses identified in recent climate action assessments, with a clearer focus on adapting to climate change and sustainable transport.

Cllr Tracy Wye, Executive Member for Sustainability and Climate Resilience, said: “Our updated Sustainability Plan ensures that Central Bedfordshire is well-prepared to face both the very current and future challenges posed by climate change.

“By focusing on energy efficiency, sustainable transport. and green investment, we are taking significant steps to reduce our carbon footprint and improve the resilience of our communities. Our commitment to sustainability is stronger than ever, especially after witnessing the recent extensive flooding across our region. We have approved the refreshed Sustainability Plan and continue to work closely with residents and businesses to achieve the new goals we have set out.”
